Launching of Sputnik 1
On October fourth 1957, the Soviet Union succeeded at launching Sputnik 1. It was considered the worlds first satellite. It weighed in at only 183.9 pounds and 90 minutes to orbit Earth. This launch would encourage new advances in political, military and technological advances. -
Sputnik 2
Second space craft sent from the soviets into space. It was also the first to carry a animal. Soviets sent up a dog named Laika, who would later die after the Blok A core didnt seperate as planned. -
Sputnik 3
Soviets sent Sputnik 3 up to explore the upper atmosphere and near space. -
Luna 1
Also known as ther first Cosmic Ship, luna 1 was the first spacecrarft to reach the vicinity of the moon and the first of the soviets Lunar Program to succesfully launch in the direction of the moon. -
Tiros 1
The U.S sent Tiros, the first sucessful weather satellite in space. -
Discoverer XIV
This launched the first U.S. camera equipped corona spy satellite -
Mercury Freedom 7
Carried Alan Shephard and made him the first U.S. astronaut into space, in a suborbital flight. -
Vostok 2
This space mission by the Soviets carried astronaut, Gherman Titov in to orbit for a whole day. This was done to study the effects of a weightless human body over a longer period of time. -
Mercruy Aurora 7
With U.S astronaut M. Scott Carpenter, the Mercury Aurora makes 3 orbitals -
Telstar 1
Succesfully relayed through space the first television pictures telephone calls and fax images. This being the first live translatlantic telecast. -
Pegasus 1
NASA launched Pegasus in order to measure meteroid abundances over the mass range in the region near Earth. This was also a test of the Apollo/Saturn Operation. With wings folded, Pegasus measured 5.3 meters high, 2.1 meters wide and 28 centimeters deep. -
Venus 3
Soviets sent this spacecraft up making it the first craft to impact venus. -
Apollo AS-203
This was basically a test of the S-IVB and the insrumental unit to make sure its obtaining flight information under orbital conditions. Despite some difficulties, all mission objectives were acheived. -
Apollo 1 Accident
Its considered one of the worst tragedies in spaceflight history. During a Pre-flight test, astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee, died in a fire in the Apollo Command Module. This was due to high oxygen amount in the cockpit and a the fact that the hatch couldnt open. -
Apollo 9
This was the third crew to go up, the difference is they held a lunar module wih them. The main purpose of the mission was to test the module in the Earths Orbit. Its goal was to stimulate maneuvers that would actually be performed on lunar missions. -
Apollo 7
Apollo 7 was the first manned flight. Their objectives were to demonstrate the Command and Service module, crew, launch vehicle and mission support facilities. On this flight, two photogaphic and three medical experiments were planned. -
Apollo 17
Apollo 17 was the eleventh and last manned mission for NASA. However, it was the sixth lunar landing. US Navy seals retrieved the module after its landing and flew rthe astronauts to a nearby recovery trip. After a risky and dangerous flight like the one 17 experienced, NASA was forced to take a break.
