  • USSR launches Suptnik 2 which carried a small dog named Laika into orbit

    The launch of sputnik 1 is important because it put
    the USSR ahead of America but the only living
    passanger, a dog Laika, burned up on the way back.

  • Explorer 1, the first American satellite to reach orbit, is launched it carried scientfic equipment that lead to the discovery of Van Allen radiation belt

    The launch of Explorer 1 was important because
    it was the first American satillite to reach orbit
    with scientific equiptment and continued to bring
    back data untill after four months the battieries died.

  • The US launches DiscovererXIV, its first camera equippedspy satellite seccessfully

    The launch of Disoverer XIV is impotant because,
    the U.S. was now able to see what the USSR was doing
    and how far they have gotten vs. how far we've gotten.

  • Gus Grissom is launched on asuborital flight. his Liberty-Bellcapsule is lost when it fills with water and sinks after splash-down.

    Gus Grissom almost dieing in his capsule is important
    because it alerts NASA that we need to make improvemeants in our capsules so an innocedent like that wont
    happen again and to make sure all of our astronauts are
    safe. And feel safe.

  • Gherman Titvo spends a day inspace aboard Vostik 2.

    Gherman Titvo spending a day in space is important
    because he was german, therefore putting USSR ahead
    of the US in the space race. making him the second
    human to orbit the earth.

  • Luna 9 becomes the first spacecraft to soft-land on the moon

    Luna 9 being the first spacecraft soft-landing on the moon
    is important because It puts them ahead of america once
    more. collecting data from the moon and they already
    have a good vision on how to land on the moon while the
    U.S is still testing also proving that the moon can hold
    the weight, and not sink as most expected.

  • Gus Grissom, Ed WHite, andRoger Chaffee are killed when a fire ignites in their Apollo 1 capsule while preforming a test on the launch pad.

    The death of these astornaunts are important because
    the U.S. lost 3 astronaunts that have been helping out
    through out the whole space race journey. Also those are one less set of hands they could've had.

  • Cosmonaut Yuri Garain, the firstman in space was killed in a plane crash

    The first man in space death is important because USSR
    lost a fantastic astronaut that has had experiance in
    space and with the tecnology is now gone.

  • the crew of APollo 7 begin a10 day mission to study the new spacecraft

    Studing the new spacecraft is important because that
    states that we are one step closer to getting to the moon
    while making sure the spacecraft is safe for the
    astronuats.

  • Neil Armstrong and Edwin "buzz"Aldrin become the first men towalk on the moon while crew mate Michael Collins orbits themoon alone.
