Vanguard 1
This spacecraft has been orbiting the earth for 58 years. It has been traveling for almost 6 decades! -
Sputnik 3 launch
Sputnik 3 was launched as a craft for reaserch there was no living animals but it was a pretty cool looking spaceship. -
NASA
NASA was born on this day -
Pioneer 1 launch
Pioneer 1 reached 70,700 miles at lift-off. -
Luna 1 Launch
Luna 1, also known as Mechta, E-1 No.4 and First Cosmic Ship, was the first spacecraft to reach the vicinity of the Earth's Moon, and the first spacecraft to be placed in heliocentric orbit. -
Pioneer 4 Launch
Pioneer 4 was a spin-stabilized unmanned spacecraft launched as part of the Pioneer program on a lunar flyby trajectory and into a heliocentric orbit making it the first U.S. probe to escape from the Earth's gravity. -
Mercury seven
These seven original American astronauts were Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard, and Deke Slayton. Members of the group flew on all classes of NASA manned orbital spacecraft of the 20th century — Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and the Space Shuttle. -

TIROS I was the first successful low-Earth orbital weather satellite, and the first of a series of Television Infrared Observation Satellites. -
Discoverer 14 launch
Discoverer 14 was the first successful low resolution photo surveillance spacecraft launched by the US Air Force. It was launched into a polar orbit by a Thor booster from Vandenberg AFB. After the Thor exhausted its fuel, the Agena A vehicle atop the Thor separated from it. The Agena's main engine then ignited, increasing the satellite's top speed to 17,658 mph, thereby achieving an orbit of 116 miles above the earth at the low point and 502 miles at the high point. -
