    own satellites and begin space exploration in earnest.
    It also markes the beginning of the comeptition
    between the US and the USSR have dominance in
    space.

  • Launch of Explorer 1 by US.

    Explorer IThe US luanched Explorer 1 to orbit the Earth.
    Explorer 1 revolved around the Earth 358 kilometers.
    Explorer 1 made itś final transmition on May 23,
    1985

  • Explorer 2 launched by US.

    Explorer 2Explorer 2 was the second satellite to lauch to make a
    full obit around the Earth. When Explorer 2 was about to
    take off, Explorer 2 wouldn't ignite.

  • Vangaurd 1 is launched by US.

    Vangaurd 1Vangaurd 1 was a small Earth orbiting satellite that lasted
    for three years out in space. It was made to test the launch
    capabilities of a three-stage launch vehicle and the effects
    of the envionment on a satellite and it's systems in orbit.

  • Launch of Sputnik 3 by USSR.

    Sputnik 3Sputnik 3 was an automatic scientific laboratory spacecraft.
    It was conically-shaped and was 3.57 m long. The spacecaft
    remained in orbit until April 6 1960.

  • Pioneer 1 launched by US.

    Pioneer 1Pioneer 1 was launched 70,700 miles into space.
    Due to a launch vehicle malfunction, the space craft
    attianed only a ballistic trajectory and never reached
    the moon.

  • Luna 1 is launched by USSR.

    Luna 1
    Luna 1 was the first space craft to reach and land on
    the moon. Luna 1 was the shape of a sphere. Luna
    was made to measure the gas type of the Sun and
    study the properties of cosmic ray's.

  • Launch of Discoverer XIV 1 byUS.

    Discovorer XIVDiscoverer XIV was the first photo satellite ever made.
    The primary goal of the program was to develop a film-return
    photographic surveillance satellite to assess how rapidly the
    Soviet Uniunwas producing long-range bombers and
    blaistic missiles and where they were being deployed.

    so far.

    that was used to land on the moon} landed with only
    30 more seconds left of fuel. The manuel room back at
    Earth erupts into cheers.
