    In 1961, the Soviets launched the first human into space. Less than a mounth later, Alan Shepard became the first american in space. The first american to orbit was John Glenn. The tiny capsule orbited Earth three times.
  • The first NASA created

    NASA was created and this is important because NASA did all of the space experiments.
  • First Woman on Earth

    Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to fly to space when she launched on the Vostok 6 mission June 16, 1963. Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman to go into space when she flew Vostok 6 in 1963. She spent almost three days in space and orbited Earth 48 times.
  • Luna 9

    The Soviet Union launched the Luna 9 that was the first spacecraft to land softly on the moon.
  • First man on Space

    April 12 was already a huge day in space, twenty years before the launch of the first shuttle mission. On that day in 1961, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (left, on the way to the launch pad) became the first human in space. Also he died on a plane crash.
