Yuri Gagarin, a man from the Soviet Union, becomes the first man in space. He become a hero for Russia and made them ahead in the space race. -

NASA announces the Gemini Program which will be docking in space. It was the second human space flight of America. -

The Soviet Union sends Aleksei Leonov into space and he performs the first space walk. He had 45 minutes of oxygen and walked for 12 minutes. -

Venera 3 is launched by the Soviet Union. It becomes the first man made object to impact Venus the following year. -

Sent by the USSR, the first sattelite to orbit the moon. The first orbit was finished in 3 hours. After it went into orbit, the sattelite was separated but still remained close. -
Apollo 1
NASA sends Apollo 1 with Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee in it. They are killed when a fire ignites in the capsule while performing a test on the launch pad. They died in 17 seconds. -

Apollo 11
Sent from NASA, Apollo 11 was the first flight to the moon with men on it. Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon. The three astronauts returned to Earth with 47.5 pounds of lunar rocks. This was a great achievment for America and we finally beat the Soviet Union. -
Appollo 17's return from the moon
It was the final manned mission in the American Apollo space program. Eugene Cernan was the commander, and last man to ever walk on the moon. This fligh also carried the only scientist to ever reach the moon. It marks the end of the Space Race.
