Sputnik
Sputnik is one of the most important space inventions out there. It was made by the Soviet Union and was the first artificial satellite to be put in orbit around Earth. But this was not all it did the creation of Sputnik also started the space race to get to the moon, huge scientific advancements, and the cold war. -
Explorer 1
Explorer 1 was the third Earth satellite after the Soviet Union’s Sputnik 1 and 2. It was launched from the USA making it North America’s first Earth satellite. -
Canadarm
The Canadarm is a huge mechanical arm that weighs 905 pounds and is 15.2 meters long. The arm is capable of retrieving and deploying about 60,000 pounds in space. Canadarm has lots of uses repairing, retrieving, or deploying satellites to inspecting through a television on the arm. -
Hubble telescope
The Hubble telescope is an amazing telescope because it's the only telescope in space. The telescope was sent into a low orbit around Earth and is meant for astronauts to use. Because of it's being in space it can see much farther into space and find things farther in the universe then a regular telescope. It is still operating today in 2012. -
International space station
This space station is a very large inhabited Earth satellite. It was set up in space by launching many pieces of the station into space then attaching them. It holds the record for being continuously occupied for over 11 years and has been visited by astronauts and cosmonauts from over 10 different nations. The station is basically a massive research facility in space. -
Spirit
This rover is one of two famous Mars rovers the other being Opportunity. These two rovers were both part of the ongoing Mars Exploration Rover Mission. The Spirit rover lasted many times longer than the creators expected. But sadly Spirit got stuck on Mars in a ditch in 2009. It was irretrievable. Its last communication with Earth was in 2010. -
Opportunity
Like its twin Spirit this rover has provided much useful information about Mars. The Opportunity rover landed on Mars shortly after Spirit. Like its famous twin it survived on Mars many times more than expected. It is actually still operating today in 2012.
