Space invention milestones

  • Sputnik

    Sputnik
In 1957 the world’s first artificial Satellite Sputnik 1 was launched into orbit. An artificial satellite means that it’s not a naturally made satellite. An example is the moon going around the Earth. As of Sputnik 1 launching it started the space race.
  • Tiros 1

    Tiros 1
Then in 1960 Tiros 1 was the first weather satellite. It was launched on April 1st by a Thor-able rocket. It was designed to test experimental techniques for taking television images of weather patterns. It stayed operational for 78 days and sent 22 952 images back to Earth.
  • Venera 3

    Venera 3
The first spacecraft to impact on another planet was Venera 3 and it impacted on Venus in 1965. It was built and launched to explore the surface of Venus. Sadly it crashed in 1966 on the surface of Venus. Although it was the first spacecraft to touch another planets surface, its communications failed before it could send any information about the planet back to Earth.
  • Voyager

From 1966 to 1968 NASA sent seven robotic spacecraft to the moons surface. Their goal was to demonstrate the feasibility of soft moon landings. On the journey that took 63 to 65 hours it ended with three minutes of moon landings. Five of the spacecraft successfully landed while two didn’t. All seven of the spacecraft are still on the moon
  • Hubble Space Telescope

Then the Hubble Space Telescope was launched in 2000 taking pictures of space.
  • Lunar Rover

Also in 1966, the lunar rover was used on the moon in the mission Apollo 11.
