    European leaders came to explore Southeast Asia. They were in search of rare spices and important goods to trade and sell. South Asia was led by the Portugal in the 1500's.

    Ferdinand Magellan's discovery
    Ferdinand Magellan reached the Philippines and claimed the islands as Spains territory. Spamiards later came to colonize the area. During this time period, Roman Catholicism spread around the Philippines

    This time frame last from 1600 up until 1700. The Dutch traders droce the Porteguese out of the Southeast Asia area. The Porteguese only kept a small portion of the reigion. The Dutch traders gained control of the tea and spice trade.

    The French and British set up colonies in Southeast Asia. They created many plantations, railroads, and mines. The Chinese and the Indians came to work at these sites. During this period Christianity spread around Southeast Asia

    The United States entered the region, and won the Philippines for Spain. By the 1900s Colonial powers ruled most of the region. The only country never colonized was Siam.
