    Louis Barat

    Louis Barat was Sophies older brother. Louis Barat went to Paris to study. In 1792, amongst the French Revolution, it became too dangerous for Louis to remain in Joigny, so he went to Paris but ended up being imprisoned in 1793, all because he went to a seminary.
  • Louis Barat was released from prison

    He decided that Joigny was too unsafe for him so he asked his parents if he could take Sophie to Paris where she would further her education with him.
  • Paris

    While in Paris Sophie lived with three other women in the house of Madame Duval. After a short time in Paris, Louis had to leave Paris again so he went back to Joigny and took Sophie with him. When the political situation eased off a bit Sophie returned to Paris and stay for 5 years living a life of prayer and studying, catechizing the children of the Marais quarter.
  • Father Joseph Varin

    In 1799 met the priest Joseph Varin who he introduced to Sophie. Varin was in Paris looking for a foundational stone for a Religious Society of Women Educators dedicated to the Sacred Heart. Varin wasn’t too sure about Sophie because she was intent on becoming a Carmelite.

    Varin managed to convince her to join him and on November 21, 1800, before a picture of the Virgin Mary Sophie and three others made their first consecration.

    The first school was started in Amiens in October of 1801. Varin appointed Sophie the Superior, even thou she was only 23 years old.

    Sophies Travels

    In 1834 Sophie sent correspondence to the entire society informing them that the new motherhouse was known to be in Paris. She traveled to many parts of Europe such as:

    Grenoble – Is where she met Philippine Duchesne for the first time in 1804 and they became lifelong friends.

  • Sophies death and canonisation

    Sophie died on May 25th, 1865, aged 85 years old. She was beatified by Pope Pius X in 1908. She was canonized in 1935 by Pope Pus XI and in June 2009 her body was returned to Paris.
