Battle of Britain
Germany vs. Britain: france had fallen within 35 days. Operation Sea Lion was germany's luftwaffe would attack. Germany would bomb as much as it possibly could. within the same month UK had lost 1,00 planes but Germany had lost 1,700. Radar was the thing that had saved Britain from falling into Germany. -
Attack on Pearl Harbor
Sunday Morning on December 7th Japan did a suprise attack on pearl harbor. this was the US navy's main pacific base. Japan sent in 6 aircraft carriers, 360 planes. there were also submarines also. The first wave was attacks on the ships and airfield. the second would finish off whatever was left. Luckily serval ships were out at sea patroling. -
Dolittle Raid
Us planned on attacking Tokyo at night. unfortuntely the planes were detected early so colonel james doolittle led the bombers and bombed during the day. it ended up killing 50 Japanese civilians and damages 100 buildings. -
Battle of Corale Sea
Japan moved to take over New Guinea. US sent 2 aircraft carriers to fight. lasted only one day and the ships never actually saw each other. only the planes engaged in battle.The battle was a draw. Finally shifted momentum for the 1st time. -
Battle of Midway
US had cracked the Japanese code. they had figured out that the japanese were going to attack Midway island. we ambushed the japanese fleet and sunk 4 aircraft carriers. 362 US killed. 3,057 japanese killed -
D-Day
This was the invasion of Normandy,France. 11,000 planes had hit the night before. at 6:30 amthe first troops had landed. most of the fighting was in omaha beach. this caused Germany a two front war. -
Invasion of Okinawa
Okinawa was 350 miles from Japan. the plan was for the US to capture the island and invade Japan. Lasted for two months. 500,000 troops and 1,213 ships were attacked. the US lost 50,000 men. after it was over japan was defenseless and the US began bombing japanese cities. -
Manhattan Project
atomic bomb planned for the US. Top secret stuff. july 6th was the first test was succesful. this was better than sending in 1 million troops to take japan. -
Truman drops the bomb
the bomb was dropped on hiroshima. killed between 80,00 and 120,000. another bomb was dropped three days later on Nagasaki. killed between 35,000 and 75,000. Russia also declared war on Japan and invaded manchuria -
V-J Day
Emperor Hirohito made decision to surrender on aug 15 1945. japan officially surrendered on Sept. 2 1945 . upto 50 million died during WW2. this was a wonderful day.
