Fall Of Barre Regime
Barre suffered serious injuries in a life-threatening car accident near Mogadishu, when the car that was driving him to his location smacked into the back of a bus during a storm. He was in the hospital for a month to be treated for head injuries, broken ribs, an shock. Even though he recovered enough by december 23, 1986 ,his poor health had people wonder who'd be more fit for the presedential spot. -
Beginning Of Civil War
By the time that contenders for the presidential spot came around, the moral authority of Barre's ruling (SRC) had collapsed. The regime was weakened even more in the 1980s as the Cold War was ending & Somalia's strategic importance was diminished. The Government became increasingly totalitarian, and resistance movements encouraged by Ethiopia's communist Derg administration, spread across the country. United Nations Intervention (1992-1995)
UN Security Council Resolution 733 and UN Security Council Resolution 746 eventually led up to the creation of UNOSOM I , which was the first mission to provide humanitarian relief and help restore order in Somalia.United Nations Security Council Resolution 794 was passed on December 3, 1992, which approved a pact of United Nations peacekeepers led by the United States. -
United Nations Intervention (Cont.)
In 1993, the UN peacekeeping pact started the United Nations operation in Somalia for two years primarily in the south. Among this was the Battle Of Mogadishu which was an unsuccessful attempt by US troops to captue the faction leader Aidid. -
End of United Nations Inervention
UN Soldiers eventually left altogether from the country on March 3rd, 1995 , having incurred more significant casulties. -

A New Government Is Made in Kenya
In the 14th attempt since (1991) rebellion, a temporary government is set up in Kenya, in the hope of creating a central government. The governing body appoints Col. Abdullahi Yusuf to be president. In Kenya, the government works in exile. -
Deadly Earthquake
Indonesia's earthquake causes tsunami waves that sweep across the Somali coast, killing 300 and displacing "tens of thousands". -
Attempted Assassination
Temporary government starts to come back to Somalia; But there is still hard separation among the members. An assassination is attempted on the president and violence raises upon their return. -
Death & Destruction
Hundreds of citizens are killed and wounded due to the battling among warring militias in Mogadishu. The temporary government gathers in Baidoa, for the first time since 2004. The majority of southern Somalia is conquered by a rival army known as the Islamic Courts. The warlords supported by the U.S also lose control of Mogadishu to the Islamic Courts. -
Power is Re-Gained
The temporary government recovers power and President Abdullahi arrives in for first time in 4 years. The leader of the Al-Shabaab rebel groups, Aden Hashi Ayro, is killed in a U.S air strike. -
State Of Emergency
Southern Somalia is attacked by the U.S, after debate with the Somali Government, targeting Al-Qaeda suspects. A status of emergency is announced.
The United Nations Security Council supports an African Union harmony mission, which will involve 8,000 troops from surrounding countries and will last six months.
There are now 1 million Somali refugees. -

In an attempt to defeat the threat of Somali pirates, the United Nations Security Council consents to sending other countries war ships to Somalia.
Gunmen in Mogadishu murder the head of the Somali United Nations Development Program. -
Battle Still Continues
The Battle is still raging on , including attempted suicide bombers in the peaceful parts of the country . 3.5 Somalis now struggle against war and famine.
