  • Sojourners Learning of a Higher Power

Sojourners Learning of a Higher Power
When Isabella Baumfree (Sojourner) was 9 years old, her mother would teach her the words of God. Her mom would bring those teachings into Sojourners daily life. Later in her life she became a very religious person and her faith took effect when she saw one of her closest friends getting a gruesome beating. She heard him calling to the Lord, and remembered her mothers teachings. Fredrick Douglass had a similar experience when he saw his aunt being beaten and heard her calling to the Lord.
  • Truth's Preachings Begin

    Truth's Preachings Begin
"The Spirit calls me, and I must go." Sojourner Truth said after hearing voices from God, insturucting her to begin her preaching. Gods voices really changed Truth. Her mind was set to do good in what she belived in. It really inspired her to do what she now is famous for. Her great confidence in abolitionism and women's rights. Speaking the truth everywhere she went. It's why she is now Sojourner Truth! Nat Turner had 3 visions. All leading to the success of his work on the path of freedom.

    Sojourner meets Anti-Slavery Reformers
Sojourner joins the Utopian North Assosiation where she meets slavery enforcers including, a abolitionist/feminist named Olive Gilbert. Sojourner showed Gilbert the fascinating and unbelievable skills she had in her opinions and views on abolitionism, and women's rights. It inspired Gilbert so much, that she wrote a book about Sojourner, that's still known and available today! We have written and performed presentations on people who we really admire and think have a important role in our lives.

At a women's rights convention in Ohio, Truth gave a very famous speech. The "Aint I Woman" Speech regarded rights for not just woman, but colored woman. She spoke of equality for genders, and colors. She stated "Among blacks are women, among woman are blacks." This speech is still referred to today. It really gave people a new perspective on womens rights. The speech spoke to many people. This connects to Elizabeth Stantons speech on women's rights. They both spoke of a similar topic.
  • Sojourner Works With and Creates Ex-Slave Programs!

Sojourner Works With and Creates Ex-Slave Programs!
Sojourner went and worked with the Freedmans Bureau, a program used to help ex-slaves rebuild their lives. A lot of the work was in D.C. and she met Abraham Lincoln. This helped in the long-run becuase many slaves were assisted, and futures began. In Sojourners life, she created a program of her own, and tried to earn land, but was denied by Congress. She still continued the program, and worked hard. This relates to the meaning of homeless shelters, helping others and getting them on track.
