Sojourner Truth

    Renamed Herself
After Truth had moved to New York in 1828 she started working with a preacher. She participated in many religious revivals and became a public speaker. In 1843 is when she stated that she was called by the spirit to speak truth and that is when she changed her name to Sojourner Truth. I believe this is important because it was the start of her journey and within herself gave her power and confidence to become and advocate.

In 1850 is when Truth dictated what is now her autobiography, The Narrative of Sojourner Truth. This book received national recognition as well as her meeting women rights activists Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B Anthony. This was the start of her pathway to advocate for Women's rights.

    Ain't I a Woman?
Truth delivered her Ain't I a Woman speech during a women's right conference in 1851 in Akron, Ohio. This is where she challenged inequality and believed that woman and men suffrage should be evolving at the same time not men first then women. She also spoke about her experiences being discrimination as a black woman.

    Presidential Election
Sojourner tried to vote in the 1872 election and was denied. Though she had been working with Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B Anthony with the women's rights movement, they were more focused on whites voting. They did not want African American males to vote, but Sojourner wanted equality for all and cited the 15th amendment when she was refused the right to vote.
