    ANTIQUITY

    In *Antiquity Indonesia had one main ethnic group that all spoke one language and followed two common religious beliefs. The main ethnic group was Javanese but there were many others.They had about 250 Languages but the main one was *JAVANESE (Malay Language). They had traditions and beliefs that were Shamanistic (the idea that there is a Shaman in the society who can make predict the future).There was also Ancestor worship (belief that the ancestors are still among and watching over us).

    Islam Arrives

    During the 13th century Gujarti and Persian merchants came and Impacted Indonesia's Religion. Along with trade they introduced Islam to the Indonesian Hindu's. It started on the Coastal areas of Java then Islam started spreading further east to the Bone and Goa Sultanates in Sulawesi, Ternate and Tidore in the Northern part of Maluku and many other places.
  • Dutch Colonization

    In 1595 the *DUTCH arrived to Indonesia in search of natural resources and a place to take over. They impacted the *LANGUAGE and the *VOCABULARY spoken there. About 10,000 terms from the Dutch are in the Indonesian language. During the 1600's the Dutch began colonizing parts of Indonesia,The Dutch were gaining control of Indonesia for 3 and a half centuries. In 1949 after four years of taking over the Dutch got excluded and became apart of New Guinea.

    Today Indonesia has one main ethnic group that is Javanese, but there are many ethnicities because Indonesia is in*ARCHIPELAGO (Many Islands).Another *MINORITY (small number)ethnic group is Chinese.The official language that they have to learn in school is called *BAHASA INDONESIAN(Trade Malay). there are approximately 10,000 Dutch words are in this language.Today the Dutch There are a total of six religions. 87% are Muslim, 9.87% are Christians, 1.69% are Hindu, 0.72% are Buddhist.
