  • Minimata Disease

    It is a neurological disease caused because of critical mercury poisoning. It was discovered in Minimata City and the cause of it was a release of methylmercury in the wastewater that came from the Chisso chemical factory(1932-1968). It accumulated in shellfish and fish at the Minamata Bay and the Shiranui Sea. When eaten by locals it caused terrible mercury poisoning, which resulted on the deaths of animals and humans (+30 years), but no one did anything to prevent its ongoing release.

    Silent Spring is a book by Rachel Carson, which addressed the negative consequences on the environment caused by the unregulated use of pesticides, and successfully brought these problems to the attention of the American public.
  • Earth day

    earth day was first held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It helped increase recycling, energy conservation, increasing plant and tree growth, save water, respect nature, reduce toxins in the air, keep the environment clean, reduce air pollution.
  • Bhopal Pesticide plant disaster

    The Bhopal Pesticide disaster happened because one of the tanks was overheated and burst, resulting in 42 tonnes of toxic methyl isocyanate gas released. This exposed 500,000 people to this toxic gas, which killed 8000-10000 people in the first 72 hours while some 25,000 people died from related diseases.

    Is an Act of the Parliament of India.created after the aftermath of the Bhopal Pesticide disaster. Talks about the protection and improvement of the human environment and the prevention of hazards to human beings, other living creatures, plants and property.
  • The Brundtland Report (1987)

    The report describes principles for sustainable development. This report aimed to obtain countries’ development and a sustainable environment at the same time. The goal was to reach a point where there was sustainable development without affecting negatively the future generations. is an agreement between many countries which says that they are trying to contribute to a world that can develop sustainably and in the correct way.

    It occurred because the planet is currently experiencing the worst extinction of plants and animals. Science estimates we are losing species at 1,000 to 10,000 the background rate (dozens going extinct everyday). After this more people are becoming aware through time and are starting to take action by becoming vegan, trying to stop deforestation, being more earth friendly. Highly increased 1990-2010.
  • UN Earth Summit Rio (UNCED)

    The UN Earth Summit hosted in Rio, Brazil was the first large scale international conference focused specifically on trying to come up with solutions for global environmental problems. This conference took place 40 years after the first “Earth Summit” in Stockholm, Sweden. It discussed topics like Climate Change, Desertification, Sustainability, Development, Forests & Conservation
  • The Kyoto protocol

    The Kyoto Protocol was an international treaty which extends the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that commits state parties to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The original Kyoto Protocol parties reduced their CO2 emissions by 12.5%, which is well beyond the 2012 target of 4.7%

  • The Paris Agreement

    On 2015 Paris brought all nations into a common cause to undertake ambitious efforts to combat climate change and adapt to its effects, with better support to assist developing countries to do so. The immediate impact concluded an agreement to address the challenges of climate change at the multilateral, regional and national levels. The agreement also contains elements of workplan to be implemented in the 2016-2020 period.
