    A site called "Six Degrees" was created in 1997 and is regarded as the original form of social media. Users had to create accounts in order to communicate with other Six Degrees users.

    The creation of MySpace caused social media to grow immensely in the early 2000's. This along with internet becoming more widespread at this time. Although MySpace is no longer relevant, it is the site that created inspiration for many of today's prominent social media platforms.

Facebook leads the way often in innovation, technology, and purchasing power. Facebook continually buys out smaller media platforms in order to continue to grow, (i.e. Instagram).

    Around the same time of Facebook's creation, YouTube was created, and was soon after bought by Google. YouTube is one of the giants of the internet today. It has changed the way we view video content, sports, even television.

    Social media in the last decade has grown exponentially. From sites like Instagram, Tumblr, Pinterest, and others, there are platforms for nearly every person and interest. These platforms have grown into key marketing and public relations tools used by companies and organizations, along with individuals.

    With the growth of social media, many legal questions have arisen. In the case "Stewart vs. Iowa," Facebook was used to find out that several jurors were connected with the defendant, which resulted in a mistrial. This would not have been possible to know without social media.

    In the YouTube legal sphere, recently an account called "H3H3" won a legal battle dealing with "fair-use" and the ability to use another YouTuber's content.

    There's no denying that social media plays a huge role in our everyday lives. From connecting with friends, to staying informed with events, each day we consume some form of social media. Even companies could not function how they currently do without the growth in social media over the last two decades. These platforms are going to continue to grow and evolve, as the needs of the consumer change.
