    Aol instant messenger came to rise in 1997. It simply allowed different AOL account holders to instantly message each other and play games. AIM gave rise to internet slang such as "LOL" or "LMAO".

It helped launch many careers and had its fair share of scandals. Myspace was sold in 2005 for $580 million dollars in 2005, then again in 2011 for $35 million.
