Social Media Disruptions

  • #BlackLivesMatter

    #BlackLivesMatter
This movement resulted mainly from a couple of police shootings of African-American men. It arose in 2015 and has continued it's steam every since. It calls for police and government reform, particularly regarding race, of course.
  • #MakeAmericaGreatAgain

    #MakeAmericaGreatAgain
Obviously the biggest event of 2016 was the Presidential election. This may have been the most controversial election ever, as it seemed as people either loved or hated Donald Trump and/or Hillary Clinton. "Make America Great Again" was President Trump's slogan that eventually carried him to victory.
  • #TakeAKnee

    #TakeAKnee
One of the most memorable movements of 2017 for me was the #TakeAKnee movement. This started as NFL players started to take a knee during the National Anthem before games in order to protest racial injustice.
  • #MeToo

    #MeToo
The #MeToo movement technically started at the end of 2017, but dominated social media platforms in 2018. This movement gained traction because of prominent celebrities and was used to bring awareness to women and girls that had been sexually assaulted and/or abused. This hashtag still has popularity today.
  • #ClimateChange

    #ClimateChange
On September 23rd of 2019 Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old Swedish Activist, gave a powerful speech on climate change at the UN. This was the start of the #ClimateChange movement as more and more people got on board with Greta, calling out governmental leaders on the need to stop climate change.
  • #ReclaimSocial

    #ReclaimSocial
We are in an early stage in 2020 and there will likely be many more movements on social media this year, but one that has stood out to me at the start of this year is the #ReclaimSocial movement. This is a campaign to make social media more inspiring and uplifting and to remove the negativity and hate.
