Black Lives Matter
Black Lives Matter is a movement created to address police brutality against black people. This specific movement was created in 2013 but created a disruption in the past 5 years with NFL player Colin Kaepernick taking a knee during the national anthem in 2016. It has since then been the leading hashtag and organization following the brutality of african-americans and systematic racism. -
Body Positivity Movement
Although this movement has been around for awhile it was a movement that created a disruption in the past 5 years. The movement was created to establish a positive body image and change the way society views the body. They used social media to establish a conversation around it and used the hashtags #HonorMyCurves & #CelebrateMySize. Companies such as Aerie and Dove have adopted this movement and centered it around some of their campaigns. -
MeToo Movement
Me Too is a movement started by sexual harassment activist and victim Tarana Burke. The movement and hashtag #MeToo went viral in October 2017 and brought attention to sexual assault and harassment. The movement followed Harvey Weinstein and popular celebrities weighed in as well. -
March For Our Lives
March For Our Lives is a student movement created in response to the school shootings across the US. It was created in 2018 after Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida was attacked by an active shooter. The hashtag #MarchForOurLives went viral and was centered around stricter gun regulations and preventing gun violence specifically school shootings. -
Teachers Strike
Teachers Strike was a movement created in 2018 to protest and raise awareness for low teacher salaries and other burdens teachers face. During the movement it was common for teachers to walkout until discussions about pay and benefits were occurring. The discussion in social media went viral with the hashtag #TeachersStrike were a lot nationwide discussions were taking place.
