Facebook is arguably the most well known and famous social media site of all time. From a college dorm room to international business. It has turning into meta corporations that now owns Instagram and Whatsapp. -
Youtube First Launches
Youtube is arguably the most popular social media platform out there. They are now owned by google and have expanded to TV and shows. With over 2 billion monthly users and 1 billion hours of vidos watched per day, youtube has grown to be one of the most visited sites of all time. One of its most popular feature, Youtube Shorts, has grown to be one of the most popular part of its site. -
Reddit Launches
Although Reddit may not be considered a social media platform, I believe that it greatly contributed to the way that social media was used and the ability to follow certain brands and people. Although, no social media sites go without flaws and Reddit has a lot of flaws. -
First Iphone release
While not even in the social media realm, the first Iphone was instrumental to the future of social media. This was the first screen to be completely touchscreen and paved the way for apps and future phones to come in. This was the first truly portable device that would be able to connect to the internet and be able to bring the photos on the go. -
Twitter first launches
Another very popular site is X(formerly known as twitter), is similar to reddit although a lot more popular. Recently X has been under fire and a hot topic due to the fact that it was bought out by Elon Musk. They use tweets to share opinions and other topics on this site. You can find almost anything on the site but not everything is factual which can lead to dangers when navigating this site. -
Instagram launches
Probably the most popular app, Instagram has grown out of another garage. Unlike Reddit and Twitter, Instagram only uses photos and videos to share their day to day life. -
SnapChat
Snapchat might be the most popular social media among the youth currently, that and TikTok. Snapchat is made to be a quick communication app were you send a quick photo of yourself to others and sometimes it comes with a caption. Unlike the rest of the apps, this as a very simple layout that only features your friends and allows for seamless communication between people. -
Discord Launches
While Discord is not your normal social media platform, it is still very popular and well known among gamers. This site allows for calls and streaming online and probable the best messaging app for desktop and pc. Its overlay has been integrated into a lot of games and pcs. -
TikTok Launches
TikTok is probably the most popular app as of right now. After being under fire and almost being completely removed from the app store, this app has been the most popular app for short form content and been a leader with snapchat for the youth. -
BeReal Launches
While not the most famous, BeReal took the internet by storm in 2020. This app was meant for someone to be on it for all of 2 minutes. At a random point in the day, you would get a notification from this app and you had 2 minutes to get on the app and take a photo of your front and back camera and then you would shut the app and do the same thing every day. Unfortunately, while a short term success, this app just did not have enough going for it, to be a long term massive hit like snap is.
