    When Barack Obama was running for president in 2008 his team used social media to get him started. They used Facebook and other blogging sites to advertise him to help him win. When using the social media sites it helped him get his message across the world to help him win everyone's votes.

    Back in 2010 during the Haiti earthquake the users used Facebook and other sites to spread the news of what was going on. People in Haiti used twitter to get updates on what they needed to do next. On certain social media they were able to text to let them know where they were strained and get help with donations much quicker.

    The Egyptian Revolution took place in 2011 and the world was able to watch the protest on twitter. Facebook was used to inform the protesters where to meet and let them know how many human right lawyers were there. Other sites was also their main source to get the live updates, get the information out for the world to know what's going on in Egypt, and also informed the protesters the areas to avoid.

    In 2014, there was a challenge that went viral on Facebook and TikTok really quickly and had people experience the challenge where they pour ice cold water over their heads. The challenge was a success because it raised money for some scientific breakthroughs but also was unsuccessful because there were people that died from hypothermia. On certain challenges they nominated friends and family to participate and it made it fun.

    In 2021 there was a data breach that occurred in 2019 that Facebook did not inform their users that their personal information was leaked online. During that time over half a billion was impacted in 106 countries. The social media site has now changed the platform to Meta to help with security.
