    Friendster was made to help people meet new friends online and keep in touch with friends in a safe way. This network was created by a computer programmer named Jonathan Abrams.

    LinkedIn
    LinkedIn is designed for job recruiters and those seeking a job, allowing them to take contacts, build profiles, and make connections.
  • Facebook

    Facebook
    Facebook was created by Mark Zuckerberg, and is worth millions of dollars. Users can post pictures and like other's, allowing them to stay in touch with family and friends as well as share pictures with them.

    Digg is a news site that aims to choose stories that are specifically for an online audience. This includes the latest viral video, or a new discovery in science. Kevin Rose and Jay Adelson created this news site.
  • YouTube

    YouTube
    YouTube is a site that allows users to create and upload videos, and others have a chance to comment and like each video. Founders included Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim.
  • Twitter

    Twitter was made as a basic platform for communication, and was meant for users to be able to update statuses, letting friends know what they were doing. In a way, it was like texting but public.
  • Spotify

    Spotify allows users to stream music, podcasts and videos. It is a freemium site, meaning that users get the basics with advertisements, but users can also pay to upgrade.

    Tumblr is a social and micro blogging site. Users can post content and short blogs, as well as following others. On April 1, 2017, Tumblr has over 341.8 million blogs. It was created by David Karp.
    FriendFeed was founded October 2, 2017, is an aggregator that combined updates from social media, blogs, and other feed. The prupose was to filter content and news and pick out what was important. FriendFeed is owned by Facebook.

    Four square is an app that is used for search and discovery. It provides recommendations of what to do and where to go based on the user's location, and later would allow users to share their location with friends.

    Invented by Mike Krieger, Instagram was meant to be a photo sharing app, where family and friends could stay updated on what you were doing. On January 2, 2017, Instagram had 400 million daily users.
  • Google+

    Google+ was launched as the social media site for Google. Although he idea is basically the same thing as other social media sites, in an attempt to make theirs different Google allows more transparency with who you share with and interact.

    Pheed is an easy way to share text, videos, and other content with users. It was made by O.D. Kobo.
  • Vine

    Vine was a mobile app that let users create short, six second skits to be viewed by other users. Vine was the idea of Dom Hofmann, Rus Yusupov, and Colin Kroll. The app was shut down January 17, 2017.
