SNL Timeline and Major Time Periods/Events

    SNL 1975-1980

    Many Famous skits were made during this period, including but not limited to Coneheads, Blues Brothers, Rosanne Rosanadanna, Jane you Ignorant Slut, Land Shark, Cheeseburger Cheeseburger, etc. This entire period of time was when the NRFPTP's were the only cast members.
  • SNL Debut Episode

    SNL Debut Episode
    SNL was created by Loren Michaels in 1975 to replace Johnny Carson's original Late Night spot, which at the time was doing re-runs of the show. On October 11, 1975, SNL debuted its first episode with Host George Carlin, a famous comedian, and the Not Ready For Primetime Players Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Garrett Morris, Jane Curtin, Laraine Newman, and Gilda Radner with a musical guest’s Billy Preston & Janis Ian.

    SNL would every episode and workweek has been the same routine or a similar routine every week. SNL starts at 11:30 PM, and ends around 1 AM, which means its generally 90 minutes long. But SNL is a 24/6 company, working day in and day out; however, almost every single day of the week is a workday for everyone working for SNL. This year, Bill Murry would become the most recent and last edition to the Not Ready for Primetime Players

    Lorne Michaels leaving SNL
    Lorne would leave SNL to do other things, leaving appointed writer Al Franken successor, however it unfortunately brought the show to a new phase that essentially brought the phrase "SNL Dead" to light.

    SNL 1980-1984

    Now in the early ’80s, Lorne left and took the cast with him, leaving SNL to the wolves of the world, but the saving grace of SNL at the time was Eddie Murphy, playing in skits such as Mr. Rogers, Gumby, James Brown Celebrity Hot Tub Party, and Buck Wheat. In the mid-’80s, famous actor Robert Downey Jr was in the cast but was considered the single worst actor in SNL, ever.

    In the late ’80s, actors Dana Carvey, Kevin Nealon, John Lovitz, and Phil Hartman joined, being in skits such as Hanz and Franz, Tarzan, Tonto, and Frankenstein, Church Lady, and impersonating Ronald Regan. This would be the return of Loren Michaels, and the show would re-gain the popularity it once had back in the late 70's. All previous cast members during the early 1980's had been fired, and a whole new cast was brought on, this was very important for SNL, and marked a sudden shift.

    SNL 1990-1995

    In the early ’90s, Mike Myers joined, and a little bit later Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider, David Spade, Chris Rock, and Chris Farley. Famous skits such as The Chanukiah song, Philip Hyper Hypo, Total Bastard Airlines, Impersonating George Bush Sr, Coffee Talk, Chippendales, impersonating Bill Clinton, and Matt Fowley Motivational Speaker. This was a major shift, as now most of the cast were stand up comics who had no previous acting roles, and brought upon a new and very different style to SNL.

    On December 18, 1997, Chris Farley, then famed SNL alumni would pass away due to drug overdose, he would be remembered for his great skills as an actor during a time where he was really the only official actor of the Not Ready For Not Ready For Primetime Players that were the 1990-1995 crew

    SNL 1995-2000

    In the late ‘90s and early 2000s added such actors such as Jimmy Fallon, Ratchel Dratch, Tracy Morgan, Darell Hammond, Seth Myers, and Will Farell with sketches such as Old Prospector, Schwedy Balls, Presidential Debate against Al Gore and Geroge Bush, and More Cowbell. This was a resurgence in the acting cast members, some of the stand-up comics remained, however most of the crew had a background in the improv scene

    SNL 2000-2010

    Next is the mid-2000’s to early 2010s. Bill Hader, Jason Sedakus, Amy Pohler, Tina Fey, Andy Samberg, and Fred Armisen. Sketches such as Debby Downer, Like a Boss, Stefon, and debate against Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin. This was the time period where SNL would become more digital, creating a whole section called Digital Shorts, where they could create non-live skits for just about everything. This was the time period where the three prominent long running cast members would all work together

    SNL 2010-Present

    And finally, we are at the cast members of today. Kate McKinnon, Jay Pharoh, Kenan Thompson, Leslie Jones, and Pete Davidson. Some sketches are the presidential debate between Trump and Hillary, David S. Pumpkins, Black Jeopardy, and Hip, Young Pete Davidson. This era largely is a debate whether or not the show is good or bad, with most people believing it has become to political with the election of Donald Trump being the catalyst for most of the hate towards the show.
