Carl Benz submitted for a patent for his "mobile propelled by a gas engine" on January 29, 1886. The patent - number 37435 – could be considered the automobile's birth certificate. The first public outing of the three-wheeled Benz Patent Motor Car, model no. 1, was reported in the newspapers in July 1886.
