Bleeding Kansas was a series of civil battles within Kansas that happened because the Kansas-Nebraska Act allowed popular sovereignty so both sides of the US wanted to quickly influence the Kansas area so they could make it a free/slave state. -
Dred Scott Case
The Dred was a man who was sent to a free state who later on was brought back to a slave state, Dred Scott said that he had spent enough time as a free man so he should not go back into slavery so he sued. The Dred Scott Case ruled that African Americans were not citizens in the US so they could not sue in a court of law. This farther angered the Northerners adding more tension between the North and South. -

When Abraham Lincoln was elected for president many Southerners saw it as a threat to their slavery, this led to Southern states seceding from the US forming the Confederate States. -
