    Slavery based on race was legalized in all colonies and the "slave codes" were instituted.
  • The abolishing of slavery begins

    Rhode Island banned slavery around 1774. Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey did so shortly after (Vaknin, n.d.).
  • The prohibition of slavery in the Midwest

    The Continental Congress passes a law making it illegal to have slaves in the Midwest (Vankin, n.d.).
  • The prohibiting of selling children under the age of 10.

    Louisiana passed a law forbidding the selling of children under the age of ten (Vaknin, n.d.). Alabama and Georgia forbid separating blood-related slave families (Vaknin, n.d.).
  • Establishment of Civil Rights section to Justice Department

    The U.S. Congress instituted a Civil Rights section to the Justice Department as well as a commission on Civil Rights to probe discriminatory conditions (History,com Editors, 2010).
  • President Kennedy put forward most comprehensive civil rights laws

    President Kennedy said, "the United States will not be fully free until all of its citizens are free" (History.com Editors, 2010).
