The Louisiana Purchase
The United States bought 828,000 square miles of land from France in 1803. The French eventually claimed back their land, however, Napoleon was to be focused primarily on war reparations so the land was sold back to the United States for 15 million dollars. -
The Lewis and Clark Expedition
President Jefferson sent a group to explore unknown lands in America. Specifically, he sent Lewis and Clark to explore land west of the Mississippi River. -
Importation of slaves ends
On January 1st 1808 the United States government officially banned importing slaves from Africa to the United States of America. Although the ban on importing slaves was in place, the importation of slaves was just lessened and did not completely stop in the United States until after the civil war. The ban in 1808 only officially stopped the slave trade in some places like the British West Indies but not everywhere. -
War of 1812
The War of 1812 was an armed conflict between the United States and the British Empire. Both sides suffered greatly in this war and experienced many losses. The Treaty of Ghent was signed 2 years later, in 1812 which put an end to the war. -
Indian Removal Act
After removing Native American Indians from the Southern states of America in 1829, Andrew Jackson signed into the law on May 28, 1830. This allowed Jackson to grant lands west of the Mississippi in exchange for Indian owned lands. -
Mexican American War
The United States and Mexico had a significant amount of conflict with one another. Specifically, the conflict involved territorial disputes. Eventually, these disputes led up to a war between them. -
Homestead Act
The Homestead Act was an act that allowed adult Americans to acquire ownership of land in the United States at a minimum cost.
