  • Intro

Karl Popper was an Austrian born philosopher who challenged the work and thought process of both philosophy and science conducted within the early 1900’s and earlier. His work on falsifiability and pseudo-science vs science was revolutionary at the time and remains an important part of how we conduct ourselves within the scientific community today.
  • Falsification

Falsification is the idea in which Popper based his foundation of science. “Falsificationism claims that a hypothesis is scientific if and only if it has the potential to be refuted by some possible observation.” (Peter, p.58). Basically, he is stating that to prove something correct, you must be able to prove that it can not be incorrect.
  • Science vs Psuedo-science

This plays into the different types of sciences that are available and how Popper classified each one. If an idea or theory cannot be proven through falsification, then according to Popper it is considered pseudo-science. For example, astrology can be determined as pseudo-science. We cannot falsify or prove most if its claims. While astronomy would be classified as science, it presents hypotheses that can be proven.
  • Lasting Impressions

Karl Popper made a profound impact on both the philosophy and scientific community. His work is regarded as some of the most important works within each of these fields. He revolutionized what we consider “science” to be. As well as how we come to scientific conclusions.
