    The evacuation of Dunkirk was when allied soldiers were evacuated from the port town of Dunkirk, France. This occurred after the Germans had taken France.

    The North African Campaign was when Italy invaded North Africa and colonized it. Later on, the British began to steal and conquer the Italian colonies.

    The Battle of Britain, or "The Blitz", refers to the frequent bombing of Britain during 1940 to 1941. The majority of casualties during this period were civilian.

    Operation Barbarossa

    Operation Barbarossa was the German plan to invade the Soviet Union. The plan almost worked, however broke the non-aggression pact between Germany and the Soviet Union.
  • Pearl Harbor

    The Japanese bombed the military base in Pearl Harbor on the Hawaiian island of Honolulu. This lead to the Americans joining the war effort.
  • The Battle of Hong Kong

    The Japanese attacked and captured Hong Kong. Over 20 thousand Canadian soldiers were sent as reinforcements, and most were captured and killed.
  • Dieppe Raid

    The Dieppe Raid was an Allied attack on the German-occupied port of Dieppe. The attack failed and over 6,000 troops were killed, most of them being Canadian.
  • Battle of Sicily

    The Allied forces invaded the island of Sicily and mainland Italy, taking it from the Axis powers. The leader of Italy fell and this lead to the full invasion of Italy.
  • Battle of Ortona

    This battle was fought between 2 German battalions and the Canadian 1st Division. Canadians won the battle with 1,300 dead.
  • D-Day

    The Normandy landings were the landing operations on 6 June 1944 (D-Day) of the Allied invasion of Normandy in Operation Overlord during World War II. As the largest seaborne invasion in history, the operation began the liberation of German-occupied northwestern Europe from Nazi control, and contributed to the Allied victory on the Western Front.
  • Juno Beach

    Juno Beach was one of five beaches of the Allied invasion of German-occupied France in the Normandy landings on 6 June 1944. Taking the beach was the responsibility of the Canadian army, and resulted in a victory with 14,000 Canadians arriving on the beach.
  • Battle of the Scheldt

    he Battle of the Scheldt was a series of military operations by the Canadian First Army - made up of of Canadian, British and Polish formations, to open up the port of Antwerp so that it could be used to supply the Allies in north-west Europe. Led by Guy Simonds, the battle took place in northern Belgium and southwestern Netherlands from October 2 to November 8, 1944. About 6,000 Canadians were killed.
  • Liberating the Netherlands

    The Liberation of the Netherlands took place in early 1945 as Canadian troops went through and cleared the Nazis out of Dutch towns. Canadians also supplied food and other items for the Dutch people as thousands were starving.
  • Battle of the Rhineland

    This battle was between the United Kingdom and Canada versus the Germans to clear out the area between the Rhine and Maas rivers. The goal was to occupy the west bank of the Rhine river. There were about 15,000 allied casualties.
