Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka
With a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court appealed Plessy v. Ferguson's mandate of "separate but equal" schools. After this ruling all schools were to become integrated so all students could have an equal education. This led to many years of unrest in some states, however it was a groundbreaking ruling. Title IX signed into law
Preident Nixon signed Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. This law gave women equality in all federally funded educational activities and programs. This not only affected funding for women's sports teams, but also increased the ability for girls' access to higher education, math and science, and career education. Lau v. Nichols
Lau v. Nichols mandates that students with limited English Profiency be treated equally. From this legislation, students with limited English proficiency were given the opportunity to continue to learn in the ways that were best from them, and ESL classes became available to all students.

Education for All Handicapped Children Act signed
The Education for All Handicapped Children Act was the first law put into place to ensure the equal education for all students with diabilities. This law evolved into the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in 1990, and later the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA) in 2004.
