Southern Christian Leadership Conference
Martin Luther King formed the Southern Christian Leadership Conference just after the Montgomery Bus Boycott had ended. The main reason for forming this conference was to fight segregation and achieve civil rights. To ensure Martin's point was spoken to the community he spoke to a crowd of 15,000 people in Washington D.C. on May the 17th, 1957. -

M.L.K first book and speaking tour
Martin Luther King published his first book "Stride Toward Freedom" the book was his way of showing the public through words what the bus boycott was like. It was based on the chronicle of 50,000 negroes who took to heart the principles of non-violence. M.L.K also explained in his book the racial conditions in the Montogmery bus boycott before, during and after. After releasing his novel and going on a speaking tour, M.L.K was nearly stabbed to death by an assailant in Herlem. -
Resigns from avenue baptist church
Martin Luther King resigned from pastoring the dexter avenue baptist church to concentrate his attention to civil rights as a full time job. King new what goals he wanted to achieve and how to achieve these goals, he moved cities, to Atlanta to help direct the activities of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. -
Appears on magazine and is awarded nobel prize
Martin Luther King appeared on the cover of "Time Magazine" as man of the year, after delivering his "I have a dream" speech to 250,000 people he claimed this label in 1964. Months later on December 10, King was awarded the "nobel peace prize" he was announced as the youngest person to be awarded this and also gave his prize money consisting of $54,123 to the furtherance of the civil rights movement. -
M.L.K was murdered
Martin Luther King died at the age of 39, he was rushed to St. Joseph's hospital on this day. James Earl Ray who was a fugitive from the missouri state penitentiary who arrested for the crime of murdering M.L.K on March 10, 1969. James plead quilty and then was sentenced to 99years in the Tennessee state penitentiary.
