Catherine Freeman
Catherine Freeman, who specialised in 400m sprinting events, became the Olympic champion for the Women's 400m in the Sydney Olympics, becoming only the second Aboriginal Australian Olympic champion. -
Steven Bradbury
Speed ice skater and four time olympian, Steven Bradbury shockingly won the 1000m short track event in the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics after his competetors crashed out in the final corner of the race, allowing Bradbury to avoid the crash and come through with a gold medal. He became the first athlete from any Southern Hemisphere coutnry to win a Winter Olympic event. -
Makybe Diva
Australian-trained thoroughbred, Makybe Diva, became the first racehorse to win the iconic Melbourne Cup three consecutive times. Makybe Diva won the event in 2003, 2004 and again in 2005; contributing to making the mare the highest stakes-earner in Australasian horse racing history. -
the Matildas
Australian international women's soccer team, the Matildas, claimed Australia's first Asian football title at the women's Asian Cup in China after defeating Korea on penalties. -
Cadel Evans
Racing cyclist, Cadel Evans, is the first and to date, only, Australian winner of the Tour de France. He gained this title, as part of the BMC racing team, in 2011 after gaining second place in the 2007 and 2008 Tours. -
Kyah Simon- the Matildas
Following the Matilda's qualification for the 2011 Women's World Cup, Kyah Simon, scored two goals against Norway, becoming the first Indigenous Australian to score in a World Cup and represented a significant event for the Matildas soccer team and Australia.
