Signifcant events leading to the Civil War

  • Missouri Compromise

    Prohibited slavery north of 36° 30' with the exeption of Missouri.
  • Tariff of 1828

    "Tariff of Abominations". Made foreing products expensive, bad for the South bc then less money. Foreing countries who then buy less raw material (cotton) from the South.
  • Nat Turner's Rebellion

    Slave Rebellion that struck fear into slave owners hearts and was the cause of new restrictions on slaves; prompted national debate of slavery.
  • Compromise Tariff

    Attempt to appease the south caused John C. Calhoun to resign from vice presidency and SC to write the Ordinance of Nullification (declared both tariff unconstitutional and said they wouldn't abide by them) then Andrew Jackson said he would use military force if they didn't comply so they did.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    Proposal that outlawed slavery in any terretory gained from the War with Mexico.
  • Mexican Cession

    Awarded as part of the treaty of Guadalupe- HIdalgo after the American Mexican War. The U.S. paid $15.000 million for 525,000 square miles.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Admitted CA as a free state and then allowed NM, NV, AZ and UT to decide whether they were free or slavery states when they got their statehood.
    It included fugitive slave act which denied captured blacks the legal power to prove their freedom.
    Ended slave trade in DC.
  • Harriet Beecher Stowe's uncle Tom's Cabin

    Published in response to the fugitive slave act; highest selling book in the 19th century; "So this is the Little woman who started this great war".
  • Kansas - Nebraska Act

    Act that gave Kansas and Nebraska the right to chose to be a free or slave state through popular sovereignty.
  • Charles Sumner Attacked by Preston Brooks on the U.S. Senate Floor

    Pro-slavery Congressman Preston Brooks attacked the abolitionist Senator Charles Sumner with a cane after Sumner had given a speech condemning the pro-slavery forces for the violence occurring in Kansas.
  • Dred Scott Loses His Case to Be Free

    Dred Scott lost his case that argued that he should be free because he had been held as a slave while living in a free state. The Supreme Court ruled that his petition could not be seen because he did not hold any property. But it went further, stating that even though he had been taken by his "owner" into a free state, he was still a slave because slaves were to be considered the property of their owners.
  • Lincoln- Douglas Debates

    Senate Debate, Lincoln forced Douglas to debate issue of slavery, Douglas supported pop-sovereignty, Lincoln asserted that slavery should not spread to territorios, Lincoln emerged as strong Republican candidate.
  • John Brown's Raid

    Harpers Ferry, VA is raided by John Brown and 22 other men in an attempt to arm the slaves; they held some very important people hostage until they were captured and convicted and hung
  • Election of 1860

    Lincoln, the republican candidate won because the Democratic party was split over slavery. As a result, the South no longer felt like it has a voice in politics and a number of states seceded from the Union.
  • Confederate States of America

    A republic formed in Fabruary and composed of eleven Southern states that seceded from the United States.
  • The Civil War
