Born
Sigismund Scholomo Freud was born May 6, 1856 in Freiberg (present day Czech Republic). His father descended from German Jews so he grew up with a Jewish culture identity. He had nine siblings altogether; he was the family favorite. This constant praise led to a sense of confidence that helped him in his life work. -
Entered University of Vienna
In 1873, Freud enrolled at the University of Vienna (a medical school). He received his medical degree in 1881. It wasn't until he met Martha Bernays in 1882 that he took a position as a doctor at Vienna General Hospital in order to make enough money to raise a family. -
Began focusing on physiology
Freud began focusing on physiology instead of medicine in 1876. This changed his whole future. It hugely affected his career path and acheivments,. -
Anna-O becomes the first psychoanalysis patient
Anna-O becomes the first psychoanalysis patient. She suffered headaches, loss of appetite, weakness and coughing. After using psychoanalysis, Freud discovered that her father was terminally ill and that this emotional barrier may be the reason for the physical symptoms. He found that discussing her feelings lessened the symptoms. -
