The book begins with a newspaper article describinga brutal attack done on Patrick, a gay, 17 year old boy. His bestfriend is devastated and horribly impacted by the situation, so she decides that she will find out who did this. After church, she tries to start her search, but everyone is too judgemental for her to stand it.

Cat continues her search to find out who attacked Patrick. She goes to Beef's house to talk to him, but he isn't home at first so she talks to Gwennie. I learned more about Gwennie and what shes like.

I learn why and what cause Patrick and Cat to stop being friends in highschool. Tommy sexually harrassed Cat the summer before ninth grade which caused her to be distant with everyone. Then on the first day of school, Patrick was teased by Tommy and his friends and after that, they stopped being friends. Also, Cat goes to the library and has to stick up for herself.

Cat goes and talks to Destiny Cooper, Tommy Larson's ex girlfriend, to see if she can get any more information about Patrick's attack.She finds out from Destiny that Beef and some of his buddies had worked in the past with Wally, "the meth cooker". She then and talks to Beef and Dupree about it.

After talking to Beef and Dupree, Cat decides she must go and talk to Wally. She doesn't stay long and gets no valuble information from him. She also goes to visit Patrick, but is not allowed to actually see him. While she's there, shes sees the rude guy she saw at the library. The two decide that they must work together to find out who attacked Patrick. She also realizes that she must go talk to Bailee- Anne, Beef's girlfriend.

Cat continues to talk with Bailee- Anne and learns that something went on the night of Patrick's attack, but she didn't quite figure out what it was. Then, on Sunday at church, she had learned that the night before, someone tried to break in to Patrick's hospital room. Cat decides she needs to talk to Jason (the college boy) to clear some things up. She goes to his dorm room and finds him.

Cat told Jason about everything she had learned from talking to the different people around the town. They got to know each other a little better and it was now official that Cat and Jason would work together to figure out who hurt Patrick.

Jason convinces Cat to talk to Robert about what he knows. She finds out that Baillee-Anne is cheating on Beef with Tommy. Robert also shares with her that Bailee- Anee is a liar. She then goes and talks to Ridings, the man who selfs fruits and veggies off the road. She doesn't get a lot information from him, but he does tell her about his wife and baby getting killed from a tornado, and now he does meth.

Cat wakes up with a cut off cow tongue on her pillow. It includes a note that says she needs to stop lurking around, trying to figure out who hurt Patrick. She also thinks back to when Tommy took advantage of her, and she realizes that she won't be afraid of him anymore.

Cat finally confronts Tommy and he apologizes. Akso, Bailee-Anne gives Cat a pack of matches from a bar called Billy the Kids that she had found in Beef's pocket. Cat and Jason go to the bar and after talking to Kid, the boss they found out that Beef is gay and Patrick was actually his boyfriend! They then realize that the crime is all linked to Beef. They also discover that Beef gave Cat the tongue from Huskers. Cat fears that Robert will get hurt cause Beef leaves Huskers with Robert. (592) -
Shine: pages 321- 350
Cat and Christian go to Suicide Rock and find Beef and Robert there. After tons of comotion, Cat and Robert end up having to jump off Suicide Rock and they survive. Then, Beef slips off the rock and misses the water. After Beef's funeral, Cat and Jason start visiting Patrick more often and he eventually wakes up and will be okay. He decides to tell the sheriff that some out- of- towners hurt him instead of Beef. I really enjoyed this book.
