Magna Carta
Englad's king, John, caused a revolt among novels. They wanted him to basically treat noblemen, and ordinary Englishmen, the same. The Magna Carta, was then established to work as a framework tfor future documents. -

Religious Freedom
Charter Rhode Island grants religious freedom. -
Anglicans and Baptists
Connecticut passes the first dissenter statue. "Full Liberty of Worship" to the Anglicans and Baptists. -
Eighteen Jailed
In Massachusetts, eighteen Baptists were jailed for refusing to pay taxes that support the Congregational Church. -
Declaration of Independence
The Continental Congress adopts the Declaration of Independence on July fourth. -
Ratify the Bill of Rights
Virginia became the 11th state to approve the first ten amendments. -
Antislavery Proposals
U.S. House of Representatives adopts gag rules. The house repeals the rules in 1844 -
Chicago Times
General Ambrose Burnside of the Union Army orders the suspension of the Chicago Times. Too many repeated on disloyal and incendiary sentiments. -
14th Amendment
Amendment 14 is ratified. "No state shall deprove anyone's religion, freedom, or property. They should not deny to any jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws." -
ACLU
American Civil Liberties Union is formed of the passage of the Espionage Act. -
Roger Baldwin
Roger Baldwin started up a new organization for the civil liberties. It is also called the ACLU American Civil Liberties Union. -
Censorship
H.L Mencken was arrested for distrubuting copies of American Mercury. All because of censorship.
