Korolev was born in Zhytomyr, a small provincial center in the Volhynian Governorate of the Russian Empire (now Ukraine).

In 1915 he entered the preparatory classes for high school in Kiev, in 1917 went to the first class of high school in Odessa.

In 1922-1924 he studied at a vocational school building, engaging in many circles and at different rates.

In 1931, together with Friedrich Zander, a space travel enthusiast, he participated in the creation of the Group for the Study of Reactive Motion (GIRD), one of the earliest state-sponsored centers for rocket development in the USSR. In May 1932 Korolev was appointed chief of the group.
