Segregation and Civil Rights

    Plessy v. Ferguson

    Homer Plessy sat in the designated 'white' area of a train car, and therefore broke the law. He chalenged the law to court. The final verdict made it legal for segregation and created the idea of 'seperate but equal'.

    Governors Race

    In 1946 Eugee Talmadge was campaining for the election. Eugene won and was to be inaugurated in January 1947, but his friends feared he would not make it because of health issues. Their sulotion was to come up with write-in ballets for his son Herman. After Eugene died in Dec., Herman was to take office, but the lutenit gov. fought that and reamaing gov. Arnall stayed until the choas was settled. This resulting in a three man race.

    Brown vs. Board of Education
    Brian Pop: Brown vs. BOEA combination of five cases of black men fighting against the board stating that segregation is schools is seperate, but not equal. After the case, schools became integrated.

    The legistaltors of Georgia went to defy the capitol and ignore the desicion of the Brows vs. BOE case and changed the GA state flag. The new flag incoperated a piece of the Confederate flag to say they would not intergrate public areas.

    A committee that was in charge with gathering state residents' sentiments regarding desegregation and reporting back to the governor. John Sibley was head of the commission. Th Govenor would then use the information to determin weather to close public schools or desgregate them.

    Civil Rights Movement

    Brain Pop: Civil Rights ActA protest against racial equality specifically against blacks. This movement started many orginizations and helped focus on major leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. The movement lasted until late 20th century. Protest would take place around the nation, voilent and nonvolient.

    The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee was an orginization that led nonviolent protest against segregation. They participated in The Albany Movement, as well as The Atlanta Project.

    JFK Speaking of Albany MovementAn event where civil right protestors got together (some in orginizations of: SNCC, SCLC) and fought against the Jim Crow Laws in Albany, GA. The movement aimed to end descrimination in all segments of society: in public transportation, schools, and hospitals; in restaurants and other dining establishments; in the public libraries; in business and government.

    Lester Maddox Speaking Out The 75th Governor of Ga, Lester Maddox was a very important leader. Before his politician career he was a resturuant owen who refused to serve to blacks in Atlanta in defieance of the Civil Rights. He then closed his resturuant so he wouldnt have to face desegregation. Maddox was very influentle in his defiance of desegregation.

    Brain Pop: Marting Luther King Jr.King was a civil rights activist who believed in peace to reach equality. He gave speeches around the country, including his biggest "I have a dream..." in Washington D.C. He was later murded,but forever reamained in America's history.
