    California applied for statehood as a free state, but if they were accepted there'd be fewer slave states than free. They settled as North would get California as a free state, and slave trade would be abolished in Washington D.C. For the south the rest of the Mexican cession would have slavery based off of popular sovereignty.

    When the south found it Northerners were holding and helping slaves escape they made this law. This meant that people who would help slaves would get hefty fines and get arrested, and people who helped catch slaves would earn a reward. The main purpose of this was to halt or put an end to the Underground Railroad.

    John Brown followed his religion as a minister and, he believed that for God's second coming slavery was preventing that. So he goes to Kansas and starts killing pro slavery members in violent ways. He ends up causing the Pottawatomie Massacre after murdering a bunch of pro slavery door to door. Then the civil war between the people in Kansas takes place.

    Dred Scott was a former slave that was brought into free state territory with his owner. When it was time for his owner and him to leave he Scott didn't want to go. Scott was able to get this sorted out in the supreme court. When his case was brought up the chief Justice ruled in favor of the slave owner. The chif Justice basically said that it doesn't matter if it a free or slave state.
