Uncle Tom's Cabin was a novel written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. The fictional story is about a slave named Uncle Tom, and his life as a slave. The book exposes the reality of slavery and intensified the tensions betweeen the north and south. -
The Kansas-Nebraska Act
On January 23, 1854, Senator Stephen Douglas proposed the Kansas- Nebraska Act which would allow the Kansas and Nebraska territories to vote on if they would allow slavery. This outraged the North because both territories were north of the 36 30 line which legally made them free states. The Kansas- Nebraska Act became law on May 30, 1854 and an election was held in each territory. Settlers from pro-slavery states voted illegally which made the North and South more agressive about their beliefs. -
Bleeding Kansas
March 30, 1855- "Border Ruffians" from the slave state Missouri came into Kansas, forcing people of Kansas to vote for slavery. May 21, 1855- John Brown found out what had happened and led an attack at Pottawatomie Creek. Next, congressman Preston S. Brooks beat Charles Sumner with a cane until it broke. About 55 died in "Bleeding Kansas." -

The Lincoln-Douglas Debates of 1858
The Lincoln-Douglas debates were over who would become the state senate of Illinois. There were seven debates all over Illinois throughout the year of 1858. The debate covered the issues of slavery in territories. Both parties were opposed to slavery, but argued over how to end it. Eventually Douglas won the election, but all the national attention Lincoln recieved led to his presidential election in 1860. -
