Lily sneaks out into the corn field with a picture of her mother and dreams about her. T.Ray finds her and punishes her by kneeling in grits. -

Lily has flashbacks of her mother who was accidently shot by Lily when Lily was four. -

Lily decides to go with Rosaleen, her nanny, into town. Rosaleen is stopped by three white folk making racist comments. Rosaleen dumps her spit jar onto their shoes and is arrested and put into jail. -

A wooden picture of Black Mary that used to belong to Lily's mother leads Lily and Rosaleen to Tiburn, South Carolina, Where they meet the beekeeping sisters, August, June, and May -

Zach (works on the bee farm with August) invites Lily to go with him on an errand, to drop off some honey at Clayton Forrest's office. While she was there Lily decided to call her T. Ray, which was a bad idea. He gets mad, yells at her for running away, and then demands to know where she is. She refuses, apologizes, and then asks him what her favorite color is. He doesnt answer and threatens to hurt her when he finds her. She then hung up. Lily writes her dad an unsendable letter, and rips it. -

After finding out Zach (beekeeper) was in jail, May decides she is done living in a world with too much tradgedy and commits suicide, by drowning herself, in the river behind the house. -

Lilly finally reveals the truth to August about who she really is and how she got there. In doing so, she finds out her mother really did leave her, but after August shows Lily a picture of Lily and her mother smiling together, Lilly learns to forgive. -

T.Ray finds Lily in Tiburn. He breaks down because Lily reminds him of her mother. August convinces him to let Lily stay with her, where she is better off.
