Beginning of the Second World War
At 4:45, September 1, 1939, Germany attacked and started the invasion of Poland, which meant the beginning of the Second World War. The Soviet Union quickly joined and the two Great Powers divided Poland into 2 parts. -
Atlantic Charter
The Atlantic Charter was a joint declaration, when the two Great Powers of Great Britain and the USA denounced war as an instrument, and showed solidarity against the aggression of the Axis Power. They also confirmed Wilsonian Points, which meant the people's right to choose their government and form of state (self-determination). -
Operation Barbarossa
The Operation Barbarossa was planned by the Germans, attacking the Soviet Union. It was the beginning of an undeclared war, in order to gain mineral resources, expand Lebensraum and defeat the Communists. They attacked them in 3 main directions: in North, through Belarus they besieged Leningrad. In the South they wanted to occupy the Crimean-Peninsula, and they reached the outskirt of Moscow in the Center. -
Hungary declared war on the Soviet Union
Due to the three unidentified planes, which bombed Kassa (which were most probably Soviet ones, executing this action by mistake) on 26th of June in 1941, Bárdossy László declared war on the Soviet Union a day after. He announced that himself in the Parliament, which was illegal, due to the fact that only the Parliament was capable to do that legally. -
Japan attacked Pearl Harbor
Japan attacked the American Navy's base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. That served a great base for the USA to declare war on the Axis Power and join the Second World War. -
Battle of Kursk
Battle of Kursk happened in the Eastern Front between the Soviet Union and Germany. It is also known as the greatest tank battle of the history. The Red Army could stop the German offensive, protecting the Russian territories. -
Operation Marguerite
Hitler knew about the plan of Kállay, backstabbing him, consequently he started to invade Hungary. He invited Horthy and informed him about the occupation of Hungary. Horthy could only remain in his position if he appointed a pro-Nazi prime minister (he chose Sztójay Döme, who was an ex embessador of Germany). -
D-Day
D-Day meant the Begging of the Operation Overlord, started by the Allied Powers. It meant the landings of the Allied forces on the French shores (Normandy), which made Germany fight on two fronts. -
Conference in Potsdam
The leaders of the 3 Great Powers, Churchill, Truman and Stalin met at the Conference in Potsdam. They decided about the complete disarmament and demilitarization of Germany, the punishment of the Nazi war criminals and divided the country into 4 occupation zones (for America, Britain, French and the Soviet Union). -
Capitulation of Japan
By the spring of 1945, the invasion of Japan by the USA became possible, but the Americans wanted to avoid another bloodshed. As a result, they used the atomic bomb, to show their power and end the war. On the 6th of August they dropped one on Hiroshima, and 3 days later another one of Nagasaki. As a result, On the 2nd of September Hirohito Emperor capitulated and Japan signed a peace treaty.
