Arrest
The nine Scottsborro boys beat up a group of white men after they claimed for them to get off of their train since it was a "white mans train". When they reached the station, they were arrested for charges of assault. Later, charges of rape were added on from Ruby Bates and Victoria Price who claimed that all nine of the boys raped them on the train. -
Lynched
The Scottsboro boys are nearly lynched when a crowd of over 100 people gather around the Scottsboro jail. -
Indiction
This is when the grand jury indicted the nine boys for charges of rape. -
Trial
This is the day that the trails begin before Judge A. E. Hawkins. -
Sentences
Haywood Patterson, Clarence Norris, Charlie Weems, Ozie Powell, Olen Montgomery, Willie Roberson, Eugene Williams, and Andy Wright were tried, convicted, and sentenced to death. Roy Wright's trial concluded in a mistrial because of wanted death even when the prosecution asked for life in prison. -

The NAACP and the International Labor Defense (ILD) fight to represent the Scottsboro Boys. -
Withdrawl
The NAACP withdrawls from the case. -

This is the day that the U.S. Supreme Court announced that they would review the Scottsboro Boys case. -
Samuel S. Leibowitz
The ILD retained a New York lawyer, Samuel S. Leibowitz to defend the Scottsboro boys. -
Haywood Patterson
On this day, Haywood Patterson was found guilty and sentenced to death by electric chair by the jury. -
Marches
Thousands march in Washington to protest the trial, as part of the many protests across the nation. -
Haywood Patterson & Clarence Norris
On this day, Haywood Patterson and Clarence Norris are tried for rape, convicted, and sentenced to death. -
U.S. Supreme Court
Supreme CourtOn this day the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the convictions of Norris and Patterson because African Americans were excluded from sitting on the juries in their trials. -
