The Scottsboro Boys Trial
The trials of the Scottsboro Boys end. Eight of the boys, Charles Weem, Clarence Norris, Andy Wright, Haywood Patterson, Ozzie Powell, Olen Montgomery, Eugene Williams, and Willie Roberson. The youngest of the boys, Roy Wright, was given a life sentence. Ruby Bates Admits She Was Not Raped
Ruby Bates writes a letter in which she states she was not raped. Alabama Supreme Court Declares Convictions Were Correct
The Alabama Supreme Court votes 6 to 1, supporting the decision made on the first trials. Powell v. Alabama
The United States Supreme Court reviewed the case and reversed the decision of the Alabama Supreme Court because the nine Scottsboro Boys were not treated fairly in court, only meeting their lawyers a day before the case. United States Supreme Court Reverses Convictions
These two United States Supreme Court cases were called Patterson v. Alabama and Norris v. Alabama. Haywood Patterson is convicted for the fourth time. Clarence Norris is sentenced to death, Ozzie Powell pleads guilty to assaulting a police officer and is sentenced to twenty years in prision. Scottsboro Boys Officially Pardoned
80 years after nine false convictions, a vote took place, pardoning all nine of the boys. “The Scottsboro Boys have finally received justice,” Governor Robert J. Bentley said.
