Aristotle
Aristotle believed that a piece of matter could be cut smaller and smaller an infinite amount of times, and that the world was made up from a combination of four simple elements: Fire, water, Earth and Air. He believed that gravity and levity controlled how these elements rose and fell. -

Democritus
Democritus was the first to suggest the term 'Atom'. He believed atoms were indivisible, the smallest particles in the universe, and that there were many different types of atoms. -

Scientists that contributed to the Atom
-
John Dalton
John Dalton believed that atoms, combined and arranged in different orders created new elements, and that each element was different due to the combination of atoms. -
Hantaro Nagaoka
Hantaro Nagaoka created the 'Saturnian Model' of the atom, and used Saturns' rings as an example. He suggested that electrons revolve around the centre of an atom of which he then made the planetary model of the atom in this form. -
Niels Bohr
Niels Bohr created the 'Bohr Model' of the atom, of which electrons orbited the nucleus of the atom. With this theory, an element was determined by the amount of electrons orbiting the atom. This paved way for the Old Quantum Theory. -
Louis De Broglie
Louis De Broglie Proved traditional physics wrong by stating that waves and particles could be the same thing, or even both things. This theory contributed to the New Atomic Theory
