Boyle's Law
Gas creates pressure in a container. If you put gas into a smaller space, the particles will hit the walls more often, making increased pressure. If you put them in bigger container, they will hit less often, making decreased pressure. -
Education
Growing up, he was fosted into a local family. When he was eight, he learned French, Greek, and Latin. When his mom died, he was sent to Eton college in England. -
Influenced by Galileo
Whenever Galileo died, Boyle started to study his work. -
Research on Vaccum
He did experiments on the low pressure of air. Sound does not travel through a vacuum. He defends the idea that a vacuum can exist where popular belief at the time was otherwise. -
Law in Action
The pressure multiplied by the volume is always equal to a constant if the temp is constant. As pressure and volume change indirectly, the constant will remain the same. -
Produces Hydrogen
He made metals react with acid which created hydrogen. -
Boyle's Law Continued
Robert Boyle described the property of gases. If you decrease the amount of gas in a container and hold the temp. constant, the pressure will increase. -
Boyle Dies
He died at 64 and was buried in London, England. -
Charles Law
Gases expand when heated because particles in hot air are farther apart than particles in cool air. Volume of gas increases with temp, as long as pressure doesn't change. The reverse is true, also. -
Jacques Charles
His law says, as gas is heated, its particles move faster and temp increases. As particles move faster, they strike the walls more often and with more force.
