The Wittings live alone in the prairie. Their closest friends are a mile away, and Jacob realizes that his children need a mother. One of Jacob's closest friends had put an ad in the newspaper and been successful. Jacob decides to do the same.

In her letter Sarah tells Jacob about her life in Maine.

Caleb writes to Sarah asking if she can sing. His mom and dad used to always sing together, but since his mom died the house is quiet. Anna asks if Sarah can braid hair and make stew.

Sarah writes back to the Wittings saying that she can sing, braid hair, and cook. She also says she will visit the family for one month.

Sarah arrives in a yellow bonnet. She has her beloved cat, Seal. She also brings a shell for Caleb and a white stone for Anna.

Sarah takes Anna and Caleb to collect wild flowers. Sarah then dries the flowers so that the family can have flowers even during the winter.

While the family is doing their daily chores a squall occurs. The family takes shelter in the barn. The family entertains themselves by sliding down a hay dune in the barn while they wait out the storm.

Sarah takes Anna and Caleb to the cow pond and teaches them how to swim.

Sarah decides to ride into town alone. Jacob, Anna, and Caleb are afraid that she has left for good. After a day of anxiously waiting, dirt begins to kick up. It's Sarah! She has bought colored chalks for her drawings. Sarah tells the family that they should not have been worried. She also lets them know that she plans on staying!
