Born in Chicago on December 20th, 1954. She was born to parents Alfredo and Elvira Cisneros. She was the third of seven children, and the only girl of the seven. -
Graduating College
Cisneros graduated with a Master of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Iowa in 1978. This was the turning point in her writing career, propelling her into writing her first work, a chapbook of poems titled "Bad Boys" in 1980. -
Teaching
After completing her college Masters Degree, Cisneros taught former highschool dropouts at the Latino Youth Highschool in Chicago. -
Fellowships
Sandra recieved fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1981 and 1988. She also received a fellowship from the Frank Dobie Artists group. She received a MacArthur fellowship in 1995. -
House on Mango Street
Cisneros' most famous publication "The House on Mango Street" was released in 1984 by Arte Público Press. Has sold over two million copies world wide. -
Before Columbus Foundation Award
The House on Mango Street won the Columbus Foundation's American Book Award in 1985 just one year after being published. Winning This award helped Cisneros gain popularity for her writings and stories. -
Macando Foundation
The Macondo Foundation was created in 1995 in Cisneros' kitchen. This foundation works with dedicated writers to better thier community through non-violent social changes. -
Caramelo
Another one of Cisneros' more popular works, "Caramelo", was published by Knopf in 2005. -
Caramelo Awards
Caramelo was awrded the Premio Napoli and was short-listed for the Dublin International IMPAC Award. Caramelo was also nominated for the Orange Prize in England. -
Have You Seen Marie?
Cisneros' most recent was "Have You Sen Marie?", published in 2012 by Knopf. This book is referred to as an adult picture book. -
Alfredo Cisneros Del Moral Foundation
Cisneros' second foundation, Alfredo Cisneros Del Moral Foundation, was created in 2000 in memorium of her father. This orqanization raises money for writers born in, living in, or writing about Texas. Since 2000 they have raised over $115,000.
