In 1850, a Board of Regents was organized by Brigham Young to establish a university in Salt Lake City, the University of Deseret. -
The First Chancellor
Orson Spencer is named as the first chancellor of the University. -
The University is Closed
The University of Deseret is closed due to lack of funds and feeder schools. -
The University Begins to be Reestablished
After years of intermittent classes in the Salt Lake City Council House began to be reestablished under the guidance of David O. Calder. -
The University Moves
In 1876, the university moves out of the Salt Lake City Council House into the Union Academy building. -
More Space is Added
The university expands into Union Square -
Name Change
The school's name was changed to the University of Utah. -
John R. Park
John R. Park, the intellectual father of the University of Utah, began arranging to obtain the land which belonged to the U.S. Army's Fort Douglas. -
The University of Utah Finds a Home
Land on the bench of Salt Lake Valley was granted by Fort Douglas to the University of Utah, where they moved to and remain today. -
John R. Park Dies
Upon his death, John R. Park left his entire fortune plus his library to the University of Utah. The university grew rapidly in the early 20th century.
